3 Useful Removals Insurance Features to Look For

While your home and contents insurance might give you some protection when you move, the coverage you get isn't always fully comprehensive. For example, your insurer won't necessarily cover your possessions in transit or at times when some of your stuff is in your old home and some in your new one.

Your furniture removalists should have their own insurance to cover some incidents or accidents; however, this also won't always fill all the gaps. So, your removals company may offer you the chance to take out a specialist insurance policy to cover the whole move.

These policies have various features. Which ones should you look out for?

1. All-of-Move Protection

During a move, your possessions will be in different places at different times. They won't always all be in the same place at the same time. So, for example, your first furniture load might be in your new home, the second might be in transit and the third might be in your old home.

Look for coverage that protects all of your stuff in every location. An effective policy protects your goods in transit, in storage, if you use it, and in both of your homes. This gives you comprehensive coverage.

2. Packed by Owner Insurance

Your removalist's insurance typically won't apply to any damage that is down to you or your actions. For example, if you pack up your own stuff and something gets damaged in the move, then you may not qualify for compensation. Policies tend to kick in if you had the removals company pack for you.

If you want to do your own packing, then look for insurance that covers anything that you pack yourself. This ensures that you'll get extra protection.

3. Mechanical and Electrical Derangement

Basic removals insurance protects your possessions from accidental damage, theft or loss; however, it doesn't always cover other problems that might arise later. For example, your electrical equipment may not have any protection if it stops working after a move for no specific reason.

If a machine or piece of equipment like a computer or washing machine doesn't work when you set it up in your new home, and it wasn't involved in a specific accident, then you might not be able to claim for it. If you arrange mechanical and electrical derangement cover, then you stand a better chance of making a successful claim in these situations.
