Moving my grandparents house

4 Questions To Ask Your Removalist

Moving your home or office can be a nerve-wracking experience. As such, it is always advisable to hire a removalist to help you execute your move. Below are some questions to help you interview your removalist.

1. When Are You Available?

It is a vital question if you would want to move immediately, at night or during the weekends or holidays. If you are in a rush, the removalist could organise backloading services. Typically, he or she will use a truck on a return journey to transport your products. Alternatively, you could share a truck with a customer who does not have many items. However, you will have to pack your items.

2. What Services Do You Provide?

Preferably, work with a removalist that provides a wide range of services. They may include:

  • The removalist should provide packing boxes, bubble wraps and blankets to pack your items and protect them from scratches during transport.
  • If you have oversized and fragile items such as a grand piano or vintage furniture, work with a removalist experienced in the transportation of such items.
  • The removalist should unpack and arrange items in your new premises.
  • When moving into an incomplete house or smaller space, choose a removalist that provides storage services.

3. What Are The Customer's Obligations?

You must understand your obligations. For instance, most removalists will expect you to secure parking for the removals truck. Besides, you may also be required to obtain permits for interstate and overseas removals. If you live in a busy apartment, the removalist may ask you to talk with the property manager to ensure your neighbours do not use specific hallways or elevators on the removals day. Most removalists do not transport firearms, pets and valuable items such as jewellery and paintings.

4. How Much Will You Charge?

The removalist may not give an instant answer. He or she will have to conduct a home inspection to determine the number of items that you intend to move. Further, he or she may have to adjust the pricing if you live in a multi-storey building or if the removalist will drive through dirt roads. He or she may charge an extra fee if you intend to move at night or during the weekend. Some removalists will give a discount if you are a senior adult, disabled, retired military officer or police officer.

Do not forget to conduct some background research on your removalist. It will help you examine his or her level of customer service and ability to handle disputes. Take a removals insurance cover to guarantee compensation in case of an accident during removals.
