How to Prep Delicate Furniture for an Interstate Move

With the help of a reputable removal firm, even the longest-distance interstate move can go smoothly! If you want to make sure everything you own arrives in one piece, it's worth putting a little extra thought into how you pack your more delicate items—and here's how.

Glass-topped tables

Never try to move a glass-topped table in one piece. In many cases the top will simply lift off; if yours is more securely attached, there will be hooks or screws to allow you to remove the pane. Tape a large sheet of cardboard around the glass before you wrap it—this ensures that if there is a breakage the glass will be contained safely. Wrap the whole pane in bubble wrap, and use sheets or blankets to further bind and protect it. Transport it upright at the side of the van, wedged tightly in by cushions or pillows to minimise movement. Try not to stack anything on top of the table's remaining frame—it's designed to bear weight evenly spread across the top, so might be damaged if used while the glass is missing.

Delicate wooden pieces

If you have wooden cabinets that have delicate decorative detail or are older antiques, don't try to disassemble them! Wrap legs and other protrusions in bubble wrap, and load them into the van first—everything else can be packed in around them. Drape sheets over them to protect the wood from bangs and knocks during the journey.

Woven wicker furniture

Wicker can last for years, but it needs a little care to keep it in top condition. You want to load wicker pieces somewhere in the middle of packing the van; after most furniture, but before your smaller boxes for kitchenware and ornaments. Throw sheets over them to ensure nothing snags on the wicker, and make sure you don't stack anything heavy on top of them—boxes of clothes or shoes should be fine, but boxes of books are best avoided!

Sofas and armchairs

You might not think of soft furnishings and delicate or needing extra care during a move, but if you want to keep them in top condition it's a good idea to put some thought into how they're packed. The frames themselves should be fairly sturdy and can take being loaded early and stacking boxes on and around them. Don't do this to the cushions, though—remove these and load them separately, vacuum-packing them if possible to keep them clean and unstained.
